The First Baptist Church of Erwin formed our Pastor Search Committee in June 2018 following the retirement of our previous pastor. The Pastor Search Committee, recognizing the significance of the task bestowed upon them by our brothers and sisters, seeks to provide transparency and a spirit of open communication with our Church family. This website will serve as a platform for us to update the Church on our progress.
Throughout the coming months, we ask that the Church continue to pray for guidance, wisdom, and unity while seeking the one whom God is already raising up to be our next Pastor. It is our sincere promise to keep the Holy Spirit as our guide and Christ as the center of our search process. Please pray that the true needs of our congregation and our greater community will be discovered as we seek the Lord's will about His plans for First Baptist Church.
The members of the Senior Pastor Search Committee are:
Logan Engle, Chairwoman
First Baptist Church of Erwin, an historic downtown church approaching our bicentennial, seeks a full-time senior pastor to lead our church into a new chapter in our history. Erwin is a small city of 6,000 nestled in the Appalachian Mountains and conveniently located between Asheville, NC and Johnson City, TN. FBC is a welcoming congregation with a commitment to serving our community through local missions and outreach and the fulfillment of Christian education from birth to adulthood. We are a Baptist congregation that affirms the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message. We desire a pastor who has a heart for pastoral ministry, seeing this ministry as a key aspect of church growth and retention. The pastor should be an avid student of God’s word and present it in a way that challenges our congregation.
Preference will be given to candidates that hold an accredited seminary or divinity school degree and possess five to ten years of experience. Compensation commensurate with education and experience.
The First Baptist Church prepared a profile to assist the understanding of those persons interested in the position of Senior Pastor. The Church Profile includes insight into community and church demographics as well as budgetary, historical, ministry, cultural, and contextual information.
How was the committee chosen?
Names were proposed by the Deacon Body in accordance with the Church Constitution. The Constitution requires that the Pastor Search Committee be composed of three men and two women. The slate of names was presented to the Church body with the opportunity for additional nominations at a called conference. The Church body confirmed the proposed slate of candidates unanimously.

What happens next?
The Pastor Search Committee meets weekly to set a vision for the pastor search process. We will meet with an area Baptist pastor search consultant during July 2018 to better understand current and future trends in pastor searches so that we may equip ourselves with the best information moving forward. In addition, the committee will provide regular updates to our brothers and sisters at Sunday morning worship and through this website and social media. To connect with members of the Pastor Search Committee, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or call committee Chair Logan Engle on 423/743-3600. We look forward to serving you and covet your prayers.
What is the Congregational Survey?
The Congregational Survey is an instrument developed very carefully by the members of the Pastor Search Committee. This opinionnaire helps us to better understand the mindset of the church as we begin the process of seeking the next undershepherd of First Baptist Church. The Congregational Survey was issued to the church body in August 2018 and was collected and tabulated in September 2018. The Pastor Search Committee will apply results of the Survey to its search process.
How may I apply to the Senior Pastor position?
The Pastor Search Committee accepts cover letters and resumes via e-mail only.
