Music at First Baptist
Music has always held a cherished place in the life of First Baptist Church of Erwin. Our congregation worships in a tradition that values excellence, congregational singing, and the great hymns of the faith—music that lifts our hearts toward God and allows every voice to take part in worship. Whether through the familiar strains of a beloved hymn or the rich harmonies of our choirs, music at FBC Erwin is an offering of praise and a witness to the hope we share in Christ.
Worship Through Song
Each Sunday, our worship service is shaped by congregational singing. We believe the gathered church is at its best when we sing together, and so our hymnody is chosen to be both theologically strong and pastorally meaningful. Our goal is not performance, but participation—every person, every generation, one voice in praise.
The Sanctuary Choir
The Sanctuary Choir is the heart of our music ministry. This dedicated group of singers leads in worship each week and offers special music throughout the year, including seasonal cantatas and festival services. Whether you read music or simply enjoy singing, the choir provides a place of fellowship, encouragement, and joyful service.
Rehearsals are uplifting, welcoming, and open to adults and youth who wish to serve through music. No audition is required—only a willing spirit.
Children & Youth Music
We believe that nurturing faith through music begins early. Our children and youth learn foundational musical skills, Scripture-based songs, and the meaning behind the music we sing in worship. Seasonal programs provide opportunities to share their gifts with the congregation, helping them grow not only in musical ability but in confidence and faith.
Handbells & Instrumental Music
The beauty of handbell music adds a unique and reverent dimension to worship throughout the year. Our handbell ensembles welcome both experienced ringers and newcomers who are eager to learn.
We also encourage instrumental participation in worship—strings, brass, woodwinds, piano, and organ—allowing the diverse gifts of our church family to come together in praise.
Our Steinway Model D Concert Grand
Music at First Baptist is supported by the remarkable acoustics of our sanctuary and our historic Steinway Model D concert grand piano. Built in 1940 and originally used by renowned pianist Roger Williams on tour, the instrument was gifted to our church by the Rex Lewis family in 1967. Recently restored with care and craftsmanship, it continues to support our worship with warmth, richness, and expressive depth. Its sound fills our sanctuary with beauty worthy of the One we worship.
Seasonal Worship & Community Traditions
Throughout the year, the music ministry leads services that mark the rhythm of the Christian calendar—Advent, Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, and other sacred moments. These services are treasured expressions of faith, drawing our church family and community together in reflection, celebration, and hope.
